What is the Construction Industry Scheme?

The CIS sets out HMRC rules regarding how payments must be handled to sub-contractors for construction work. Your UTR number (formerly the CIS card) is issued when you register with the HMRC for CIS status and ensures that the correct amounts of CIS tax are deducted from your payments.
