A guide to becoming an oil and gas contractor

Start your career as an oil and gas contractor

The oil and gas industry is rich in opportunities for contractors. As things stand, the industry as a whole is struggling to meet the demand of consumers, so now is the perfect time to consider becoming a contractor if you have skills required in the oil and gas industry.

Oil and gas contracts can take you all over the world because crude oil is found in a variety of different locations. Think, one week you could be working in luxurious Dubai with the sun beating down and the next you could be in the North Sea with just ocean blue surrounding you on all sides. It’s safe to say that you wouldn’t be stuck in an office from 9 to 5 for the rest of your life.

At Futurelink Group, we are experts in contractor payroll and have a number of solutions that can ensure you are working in the most tax efficient way possible. To find out more information about our services and how we can help, call our customer care team on +44 (0)1923 277 900.

The benefits of being an oil and gas contractor

By deciding to make the switch from permanent employment to contracting, there are a number of benefits that you can take advantage of, these include but are not limited to:

  • Higher rates of pay
  • Better prospects due to an endless supply of contracts
  • More control over the work you undertake
  • The chance to be your own boss
  • Potentially lower taxes

How to become an oil and gas contractor

Oil and gas contractors are specialists in their field; you can’t just wake up one day and decide to become one if you don’t have the necessary skills. An essential requirement is  experience and some positions will require a degree in a relevant subject, preferably anything mathematical or associated with applied sciences.

As contractors are seen as experts in their chosen fields it’s important to gain some experience in a permanent role before you decide to become a full-time contractor, as the company you are contracting with will not be able to provide you with training (this could make your contract fall inside IR35) and also a few years of relevant experience in a permanent role will help you to enhance your contractor CV.

Once you have a few years’ experience under your belt and obtained the necessary qualifications, you will be in a position where you can start thinking about searching for oil and gas contracting positions.

Finding work

Now that you are in a position to start working as a contractor, you need to find a contract! Recruitment companies are a great place to start. There are a number of specialist oil and gas recruiters who will be able to help you find the right contract to meet your needs. A quick Google search should provide you with a wealth of companies to contact.

In addition to using recruitment companies, another avenue to explore is contacting companies directly. For example, if you feel that you have a lot to offer a company like BP, visit their website’s careers section and contact the necessary person with your CV. If you are struggling to find the appropriate person to contact, perform a search on LinkedIn for people who work in recruitment for your preferred companies.

How our solutions can help

We offer a range of comprehensive solutions to help service the payroll and accountancy needs of contractors. If you are thinking of becoming an oil and gas contractor, the solutions that would be most relevant are Sole TraderUmbrella PAYE and Limited Company.

Limited companies are one of the most tax efficient ways for contractors to operate, for a few extra minutes of admin work you can maximise your take home pay. As a client of our Limited company solution our qualified accountants will provide you with unbiased advice and handle as much or as little of your accountancy needs as required. We’ll even get your limited company set up within 24 hours!

On the other hand, you may decide to opt for our umbrella company solution. You’ll be employed directly by the umbrella company; we’ll invoice your client(s) on your behalf and pay you through PAYE in the most efficient way possible. You’ll receive the benefits of self-employment like being your own boss and choosing when to work, but without the admin responsibilities that often come hand in hand.
