What is a UTR Number and do I need one?

Whenever you work with an accountant or anyone who is managing your part of your financial affairs, they will almost certainly ask you for a UTR Number. A UTR (Unique Taxpayer Reference) Number is a 10 digit number that is unique to either you or your company and you’ll be presented with one when you register for self-employment.

At Futurelink Group we have a wealth of experience and knowledge in providing contractor solutions. Whether you are looking for an Umbrella PAYE solution or thinking of starting your own business and becoming a freelancer, we have a solution for you. Call one of our friendly experts on +44 (0)1923 277 900 and they will be happy to help!

Why do I need a UTR Number?

You will need to have your UTR Number to hand when completing a self-assessment tax return. HMRC use this number to identify you as a self-employed tax payer. As a result, if you are earning money that isn’t subject to PAYE it is essential that you register as self-employed with HMRC and receive a UTR Number.

If you are found to be operating as self-employed without having notified HMRC you could be subject to heavy fines and potential criminal prosecution.

When you or your accountant submits your self-assessment tax return, if you don’t have a valid UTR Number attached to your submission it will fail.

It is for these above reasons that we require all our clients to provide us with a UTR number, so make sure you keep yours safe.

Where can I find my UTR Number?

If you have been registered as self-employed for a while, you can be forgiven for not remembering your UTR Number. It’s ok; there are a number of ways of finding it.

The fastest way of obtaining your UTR number is by logging onto the online services area of the HMRC website. If you have registered for this system you should have an email confirming your login details and once you login to the portal you will be presented with your UTR Number.

Alternatively, if you don’t have access to HMRC’s online services, you’ll be able to find a copy of your UTR Number on a previous self-assessment tax return.

If you are ready to take the next steps to starting your own business or would like to find out more information about our straightforward contractor solutions, please call us on +44 (0)1923 277 900.
